EMDR INTENSIVES
People are unique and treatment offerings should match that diversity.
Trauma is not what happens to us, trauma is how we are impacted by what happens to us. What someone considers to be traumatic is based on their perspectives and experiences in the world, but there are some universal needs, like that of safety and belonging, that when unmet leave us more dysregulated and vulnerable. Sadly, the systems that we have created as a culture do not easily align with these needs being universally and consistently met. Many of my clients use EMDR to change limiting beliefs, decrease their frequency of being triggered and dysregulated and to bring new adaptive information to old narratives developed in childhood, helping them connect with their authenticity and intrinsic worth.
While I have witnessed amazing shifts and growth in my clients, I feel constrained in my ability to best meet their needs and remain in the confines of the current managed care model. While I have been fortunate enough to work with some clients for extended visits, the majority of my clients have been insurance based and therefore the lengths of sessions have been dictated by managed care rather than the best interest of the client. When I have been fortunate enough to see clients outside of these time limits, I saw amazing progress in a much shorter amount of time. What we could accomplish in one extended session would have taken well over a month to do in weekly one-hour sessions (where at least 25% of it is spent catching up and easing in and then easing out of the emotional content). Much to insurance companies dismay, this actually ends up saving people time and money. For the few that I have done this with repeatedly, treatment was accelerated exponentially. More exciting than my limited experience is that the research supports my findings, and it has been replicated to demonstrate its effectiveness and efficiency.
While an intensive session is not a replacement for ongoing psychotherapy services for underlying mental health issues, it is an amazing adjunctive service to existing behavioral health care or for those that don't meet medical criteria for insurance covered care but have a specific stressor, experience, symptom or limiting belief this could be the perfect solution.
